What happens during surgery
Liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia, but if the doctor approves, patients may elect to undergo local anesthesia instead. Depending on how many areas are treated and the amount of fat to be suctioned, the procedure may last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours. The doctor will clean and mark the target areas before making a small incision through which he will thread the cannula. In some cases, a tumescent fluid is first introduced into the cells in order to help break up the fat prior to suctioning. Once the fat has been removed, the doctor will suture the incisions and dress the wounds.

Recovery
After surgery, the patient may be fitted with a compression garment, along with drainage tubes. These accessories facilitate a rapid and complete healing process, helping to minimize swelling and bruising. Dr. Lahijani will provide you with a detailed aftercare plan as well as a prescription for the appropriate pain medications. While you may shower after the first 24 hours, activities such as swimming and exercise are discouraged for the first 2-4 weeks. Most clients find they are ready to return to work within 3-5 days.
